I remember reading this would boost performance by installing the OS on a separate partition from applications. Is this still the case with Vista? I did a search here and didn't really find anything. If so, how much space do we need on this partition?

Thanks. Hope this hasn't already been discussed :) If so, please kindly refer me to that discussion.

I can't imagine that installing software to a different partition on the same hard drive as the OS would provide any performance increase. If you were to install to a different hard drive all together, then it might, but probably nothing very noticeable.

installing apps on a different partition does increase the performance if the space on your OS drive is low. the OS drive requires some size for page file expansion. the apps installing to this drive may eat away this. so its always better to install them on a separate partition. the performance increase depends on the amount of free space in C: drive

I see. So then, as long as you have >few GB free on the HD, you won't notice a difference. Probably not worth it to me then. Thanks, rep :)

i always install all apps other that the antivirus on separate partition. it just saves me all the clutter in C:\Program Files. wherever u install or uninstall programs use ccleaner or easycleaner to clean junk periodically

So for vista home premium + page file space on its own partition, how much space do you need to allocate?

the page file usage depends on the amount of ram and the applications that u use. if u have 1gb or less then u will need frequent use of pagefile. if it is 2gb then pagefile will be much used only on intensive gaming and stuff like that. Virtual machines are something that heavily uses this. however windows will use a min amount of PF even if u have got a very huge memory. i will recommend 50% disk space if the size of C: is less than 15 GB. and 33% if its less than 30 gb and 20% for higher amount of C:

If you are using 4GB of RAM, then why not Vista x64 so that you can have full access to it?
