Well here goes the story as follows.

I originally downloaded a trial version of McAfee Internet Security with the 30 days limitation, and it soon expired so I went and brought the VirusScan Plus 2007 OEM disc and tried it install, then disaster struck. I checked on their website and it says its Vista compatible, so I thought it would work. It did come up with a "known compatibility issue" warning, but I ignored that (I know I won't now in the future).

Half way through installation it flipping crashed. I tried to restart my Vista and it just won't log back in - tried a couple of times and luckily enough I managed to get it in to Safe Mode, tried to revert back to System Restore points - still messed up. So I backed up my files and decided to wipe the OS.

I spent some time searching/reading on this forum to seek information about reverting back to XP - but decided not too cause I've still go Uni work to be doing so I don't wanna waste time to try and get everything to work, and you guys said that there's no support from Sony if you revert back to XP on a SZ4 AND that the future is gonna be Vista - so might as well stick to the easy 'System Recovery' option. And indeed it did work with no hassle...

except for the waste of time to try and get all the Sony crap off! So annoying.

Anyway now after 20+ working hour its back to my usable state.

Question is - I'm definately scared of popping that McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 disc back in the drive cause I don't want it to screw up everything again.

But that also means that I don't have a virus scanner on-board? Not exactly safe is it?

Any suggestions on what I can do?

    Thanks.

Go get one of the free AV scanners like Avira.

    McAfee! Ewww, massive resource hog!

Get Nod 32, Kapersky, Avast, AVG, something along those lines and it will work much better.

You should try Norton Internet Security 2007 too. Norton 2007 release product is slimmer, most of its code have been rewritten and does not resource hog at all. I am using it with Vista Business 32 bit and there is no noticeable delay or slowdon.

Is a totally different experience with their 2006 release software.

Whaat?? Using Norton? That's my worst nightmare - always had ten thousand problems with it...

I've asked around on the McAfee.com forum and still have no good reply on how to fix this - as a result I'm still running without a virus scanner/protection. They recommended me this... but it still doesn't work -> http://uk.mcafee.com/vista/

I'm getting this flipping error message:

I use Avast! with my Vista home premium laptop. Works perfectly. No worries. In fact, it even caught a virus for me when I got lazy dowloading stuff from torrents.

I told you, their release of 2007 is very different than its 2006 predecessor. You can googling yourself about NIS 2007 review at PC Magazine and other sites.
