I ran the ZoneAlarm Security Suite on XP, but the beta ZA for Vista is quite a ways away from being ready for prime time.

Right now I'm running PC Tools Firewall Plus alongside PC Tools Spyware Doctor and avast! free antivirus.

The Windows Firewall, even in Vista, does an extremely poor job of blocking outgoing connections, so once something is on your machine it owns it. I disabled the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender in favor of those listed in my earlier post.

At least ZoneAlarm has a beta. I'm still waiting for Kerio, as they still have nothing for Vista.

Not all the tabs (functions) present in the XP version of ZoneAlarm were there. For example, there was no way to bring up the list of sites to change the settings on a specific site basis on the Vista version. It seemed to slow everything down, too.

Well, I really wanted to believe that CheckPoint would release ZoneAlarm Security Suite for Vista ...

I feel a little like the lady who walked through the room while the NFL football game was on and, upon seeing the instant replay, commented "Maybe he'll catch it this time"

    :sigh:

It is a myth that a firewall can prevent outgoing info leak if some program takes over the machine(running in the background without being noticed).

If your firewall allows DNS query, it is already useless.

From what do you claim that windows firewall in vista is poor in blocking out bound traffic. Do you claim to know the underlying structure of windows firewall?
" so once something is on your machine it owns it" if you are so big on security, you would know, if something gets on your machine and if it can "own" windows firewall, so can it own every other firewall out there, but I am sure you know better since you are an expert on vista's networking stack.

Stop feeding people with accusations that aren't fact checked, and how does something get on your system in the first place with all that 3rd party junk protections you've installed? The false sense of security they give so you can yes everything on things you download?

As for OP, windows firewall is plenty enough if you use your machine wisely. It stops unauthorized inbound traffic, worms, and if you want to, in vista, you can enable outbound blocking as well. It is much better to use something that will work rather than using something that "might" be compatible, how do you know it's doing its job right?

The ZoneAlarm website now has a link to download the Vista compatible version of Zone Alarm Security Suite, which I have downloaded and installed. It does not appear to be much different than the beta externally; however, the version numbers changed, so there were obviously internal changes.

I was going to simply ignore your rant; however, I feel compelled to point out that while it is possible to block outgoing connections with Windows Firewall, in Vista only, not XP, it is a completely manual process with no detection nor prompting. You want to use that, go ahead. You might want to read a few of the Similar Threads referenced below, such as this one and this one.

The version of Zone Alarm Security Suite released for Vista is incomplete when compared to the XP version. "Privacy features will be implemented in the next version of ZA later this year."

First of all, I must apologies for my last post, I must admit that I took things out of context and seemed to be attacking you, it was late and I was cranky.

I thought this is a "Firewall For Vista" thread, that's why when I wrote windows firewall, I assumed people would know I am talking about vista windows firewall.

When you make a forum post, not a formal article, about Michael Jordan, you don't write, "the former basketball player Michael Jordan", you would simply write, Michael Jordan, and leave out the obvious fact that just about everyone knows. I didn't feel the need to state the obvious about xp firewall. Anyone who uses xp and wanted outbound control would quickly find out xp doesn't support one.

I use 3rd party firewalls on my xp machines and still do use them, because XP does not control outbound traffic and I liked to be in control of my machines. I don't use outbound traffic to monitor for bad traffic as I don't believe in getting virus in the first place and when they do, I don't trust any firewall to tell me anything useful at that point. I rather use the netstat command, and even then I am not sure.

I like comodo for my xp because it gives me more information than zonealarm, but isn't as user friendly. I still have ZA on this machine I am typing on though. I have to unregister the dll nowadays when I have to install ZA on a machine is a bad sign, too.

My original intention was to object that saying windows firewall isn't reliable is not fact checked and one should be more responsible when giving out advise as such.

In vista, simply type in search "wf.msc" you will be able to see vista firewall in detail and its config.
