    Hey, just fresh installed my book with Win 7 Pro, running FF 3.5.7
    I don't know exactly when this started, I put it down to human error, but it got to a point where I started questioning my keyboard, and now I'm sure it's a FF problem; I started the on screen keyboard, which highlights the keys being pressed and Ctrl was definitely highlighted while the problem persisted. Also, I've had no problem with other keyboard shortcuts (none that I've noticed anyway).

    Sorry, I meant when clicking on a link...
    Guess I should have been more specific...

    Ctrl + T works, I use it too, but not say if I'm reading a blog, Lifehacker for example, where I scroll through the homepage and open all the interesting articles in new tabs

    2 checks under Tools->Options->Tabs:

    . open new windows in a new tab instead
    . when I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately

    Have you tried them? You should not have to use CTRL either. Just clicking on the link.

    cheers ...

    That's only good for links which natively open new windows.

    Yeah, pain with a touchpad though

    Simultaneous left & right click - I used to do that all the time when using my touchpad without a mouse.

    I have my left touchpad button as middle click and tap to click as the left mouse button. Acrobat Pro also makes extensive use of the middle mouse button, so it eventually becomes a necessity.

    Another solution is to download Tab Mix Plus, awesome FireFox extension.
