I've used Firefox before in Vista Business with no problems. But now that I've made the upgrade to Vista Ultimate, Firefox no longer works properly. Immediately after installing the browser, it will open up properly. But if I close it, it will never reopen with a reinstall. I'm getting these two error messages constantly. The first is what happens when I've tried to run Firefox, found it broken, and tried installing it. The second is what I get after I kill that process from the first message, reinstall Firefox, open it, close it, and try to reopen it.

    Any suggestions?

    EDIT: It's fixed now.

Firefox (Windows) "The program must close to allow a previous installation attempt to complete. Please restart."
If you are receiving this message when attempting to start Firefox and a restart has no effect (bug 283680):
Open the Firefox installation directory (usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox) and delete the file "xpicleanup.dat" [6].

Windows Vista: Open the C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder and delete the file "xpicleanup.dat" (you may need to first end the "xpicleanup" process, if found, in Windows Task Manager and delete the file "xpicleanup.exe" in the Firefox installation directory) [7].

Maybe some files have been corrupted when you "upgraded" to Ultimate.

I actually did a complete, clean install of Ultimate. So nothing could have gotten corrupted if there was nothing there to begin with.

    Did you install firefox last?

If you installed it after you already installed many drivers and apps. Maybe it's easy to do the closest restore before Firebox.

OR YOU CAN .....Try to uninstall Firefox or Delete the Programs folder.
Run a Reg and Temp files cleaner ...like CCleaner.
Then reboot and try to reinstall Firefox.

My understanding is that MS and Mozilla has a shared team dedicated to solving FF incompatibility problems.

vista is still very "virgin" as far as understanding it concerns. Mainly saying the way m$ playing/messing about with another java "standard". most of the time, installation script would not work, the only safe work.around is copy some whole working folder under xp over and then invoke the exe direct

this is, sorrily, a hit and miss until apps can say that it is vista compatible

    cheers ...

I am wondering if that file is interfering with load of firefox (possible adware/spyware/virus/third party app) - and I can't find anything on the net about it either.

EDIT: I got it fixed. And it was quite simple, check the support page on mozilla.com. Who'da thunk it?
