For anyone unaware, Firefox version 2.0.0.5 is now available for free download at GetFirefox.com (as of yesterday, July 17th). The release notes are as follows:

    Fixed in Firefox 2.0.0.5
    MFSA 2007-25 XPCNativeWrapper pollution
MFSA 2007-24 Unauthorized access to wyciwyg:// documents
MFSA 2007-23 Remote code execution by launching Firefox from Internet Explorer
MFSA 2007-22 File type confusion due to %00 in name
MFSA 2007-21 Privilege escalation using an event handler attached to an element not in the document
MFSA 2007-20 Frame spoofing while window is loading
MFSA 2007-19 XSS using addEventListener and setTimeout
MFSA 2007-18 Crashes with evidence of memory corruption

Hopefully this new version addresses the memory leak, but it's not looking like it. It looks like we're going to have to wait until 3.0 to see that patched. :(

Two things you can do to reduce memory usage in FF:

browser.cache.disk.capacity (amount of HD space to be used as a cache). Reduce as desired.

browser.cache.memory.capacity (amount of RAM to be used as a cache). Reduce as desired.

However, running a system w/2gigs of RAM (and not Vista, which means I actually get to use more than 1 gig of said RAM), I've eliminated the disk cache, and boosted the RAM cache to 500mb. It's fun!

You can check how much you're currently using of either via "about:cache".

I opened the dell site to see the design of vostro. Firefox hung up loading the flash player animation. All I can do is end firefox.exe in task manager.

Anyone here knows what could be the reason?. It never happened with IE7.

Firefox is still slow loading some web pages.

Thanks, Matt. For those who do not want to wait for Firefox to notify you of an update, you can always initiate it yourself via Menu/Help/Check for Updates.

During update install, It said certain Java is not compatible. So I clicked check for compatible versions and it came up with none. Is this something to worry about?

I hate when they have an update. Usually some of my themes and extensions won't work.

No. Sun has not released a 2.0.0.4 (and above) compatible version yet. It has been confirmed that they are working on one.
I shouldn't have to change Firefox's default settings to prevent memory leaks - this is a problem and should be treated as such.

Note in my post I never said or implied this was (or wasn't) a memory tweak, or that users were required to fix it themselves. I realize you don't like Firefox's memory issues, but please don't imply I'm some sort of memory leak denier. I offered a suggestion for users interested in reducing memory usage while using Firefox. As with all my advice, you're free to use it, or not.

Firefox is know to have memory leaks by default and it is a documented "feature".

Back in Firefox 1.5 days there was an article that discussed caching back pages as a feature that was being misconstrued as a memory leak. That article is here.

I find the more definitive source for Firefox-related information to be the MozillaZine knowledge base site. Articles such as this, for instance.

Myself, I am 100% OK with the memory Firefox uses; it has not caused me any problems whatsoever.

I'm having a problem with the firefox since the 2.0.0.4 version, mainly with the tabbed browsing :(
-Sometimes I cannot drag and drop the Tabs (to change their order), they get stuck.
-The title of the Firefox Window does not change if you switch between the different tabs.
Just want to see how many people have this problem.

I have not seen these problems. However, I also run the TabMixPlus add-on/extension, which could change things a bit in this regard.

Never had either problem. From the sound of it, I think it might be a conflict between some extensions you're running... mind posting a list? I'll try to help you out.

You would rather have beta software that doesn't really fully work until an SP1 or SP2 is released? ;)

The Firefox and Thunderbird releases are not too frequent and are extremely stable.

sure - last 4 days were bum with all sort of hang, but yesterday nightly build fixed it. apart from extension/theme, minefield is flying high. some web sites still can only support ff 1.5-2.xx, it will let minefield access the page but built in java console and some flash will not function.

    cheers ...

Well iunno.. maybe it's cause I'm on 7mb/sec rogers line.. but even before when I was down at 5 mbps it wasn't that bad either.. updates donwloaded quite fast and the best thing was it didn't require windows to restart. The updates I don't find too annoying since each time they make major updates on security issues which is good. This also shows they're very responsible to security holes which is what everyone complains about microsoft.

I used to be a big fan of IE but FF really won me over. It's still my main browser today and IE being my secondary (I only use it if I really have no choice)

Isn't it funny how Mozilla is more on top of security patches and Firefox is free? Meanwhile Microsoft is ignorant about IE... hmm... yes, I definitely see how that works. ;)

I recently discovered that the official acronym for Firefox is Fx, but FF is popularly used too. Wikipedia is awesome. :p
