I opened firefox 2, and an "update" appeared. Logically, I accepted the update. Now, every time I open my FF browser this message appears:

"One or more could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed, and that you have permission to modify files, and then restart firefox and try again."

I have to click "OK" and my browser starts up, but I don't know how to get rid of this error message. I don't even know what that message means. Does anyone know anything about this, or how to correct it?

    Thanks.

Try renaming xpicleanup.exe to xpicleanup.bak and xpicleanup.dat to xpicleanup.bak1 (if you have it) in "Program Files/Mozilla Firefox" (with firefox not running) and restart (Firefox that is).

I did the above (thank you, by the way)... it seemed to work at first, but as soon as I re-started FF, the same exact message came up again!! I don't understand what the problem is... If anyone has another solution please let me know.

Make sure you're connected to the internet when you restart FF. It also happened to me, but when I restarted FF, it went and tried the update again, grabbing data from home. But before you do that, do the following:

Rename all xpicleaner.* files that you find to .*bak1, *.bak2, etc. There is a folder in "program files\mozilla firefox" called "updates". In that folder you'll find another called "0" I believe. Delete everything in that folder, crap like "update.status", etc. Do a system restart, fire up FF.

Ok... I'm back. I've figured out how to get the message to stop popping up. But NOW, FF continues to try and update whatever it's trying to update, and failing. Which means each time it does that I have to go back and delete the "update" file stuff. It doesn't matter what I do. If I press "Later" it will come back later, if I press "cancel" it will come back later... it's always trying to get me to update something, and I'd love to, but it ISN'T WORKING so I don't care! So how do I stop FF from contiunously bugging me to upgrade?

    Uninstall and reinstall firefox?

You could try downloading new version and uninstalling firefox, then installing new version...

It'll either work or screw your firefox.
