i currently play/test betas from firefox (minefield), opera9.5 and Safari 3.0.x and have observed that opera (along with IE) has the fastest cold start when being clicked on. This is nothing new from opera from the start, and i will look into it a bit more from opera installation point of view to see why is it that makes it so. Opera is free but not open source so it will take some determination.

anyway, for hardcore FF users, we always have what one call a preloader (same as netscape quicklaunch mechanism). I have digged it up again and tested it with FF2.0.0.10 for over 2 weeks. And now i can say that for this small startup utitlity (at windows start), Opera and IE can move over and make room for the snapping start of FF.

Firefox on my machine has always started faster by IE, not by much but if I click on IE, then Firefox, Firefox will open a split second quicker even though it was clicked second. Not the most sophisticated test....but works for me.

I think I've used this tool before. I was displeased with what it did. What Firefox Preloader basically does is to store FF in memory when the computer starts up. It's basically the same as having FF minimized in your taskbar all the time and would take up that much memory usage. Kind of pointless since you only save about a few seconds by using this tool.

i cannot see taking (and staying) at 4k + is the same thing as FF minimized or stored in memory (70-110k under minefield). I like to think about preloader as the pappa of windows prefetching mechanism.

    cheers ...
