It's certainly possible. See DVD Shrink, which will make you nice backup copies.

Whether it is legal is another matter. The DVD companies would prefer you to buy another copy if your original gets damaged.

if you own the movie, i believe you are within your rights of "fair use" to copy it to your hard drive. programs like dvd shrink 3.2 will allow you to create an iso image of the dvd, and then using another free program like alcohol 52%, you can mount that iso image as a dvd drive.

...........or create the dvd folders to your hard drive, where you can play the VOB files with a dvd player program.

    Yeah, that's what I do.

btw, what's the advantage of using an ISO image with a virtual drive?

To the OP. Sometimes, DVD Shrink can not decrypt movies. In those instances, some kind of DVD decrypting utility might be required. Not sure if that type of software constitutes illegality or not. Possibly, yes!

According to the DMCA, actually circumventing encryption isn't illegal, but acquiring or making tools to do so is. How's that for logic? "It's not illegal to drive, but it's illegal to make or own a car".

Doesn't XP Media Center have the neccesary mpeg-2 codec to play the movies from your hard drive? If you use DVD Shrink to compress a 4GB movie to 1GB (for example), you don't really need the "best" player anyway (if you see where I'm going)..........

Yes. Any dvd player software can play VOB files (although I can't get Vista's Media Center to recognize them for whatever reason).
