i recovered some pictures from an old hard drive but it seems there are duplicates of some pictures. is there any software that finds all duplicate pictures and lets me choose which to keep/delete?

Well you can order pictures by file size and duplicates will be next to each other for easy deleting.

there is about 30 folders and some have folders within the folders with more duplicates. i dont thnk i can hunt for all the pics and then put them nto one folder. kind of defeats the purpose of beng in dated folders

Pretty sure that Google's Picasa has some decent deduplication options

I used to have an app that would find duplicate images based on some pretty interesting algorithm. It would even find duplicates of the same image that were two different sizes like an 800x600 and the same image at 400x300. I'll dig around and see if I can find it again. It had a slider that you used to control how close a match it had to be to be considered a duplicate. The interface then showed you the two (or more) dups side by side and let you choose which one to delete or ignore. You pointed it to a "master" directory and it created an index of sorts for that directory. Then you pointed it to a second directory to compare against. It did a great job.

Isn't that a generic duplicate file finder, not an duplicate image finder? It only finds exact duplicates, right?

Found it! It is still a freebie. I used it five or six years ago. Highly recommended.

Yes, it's a generic file duplicate finder. and of course, two files with the slightest difference are no longer duplicates :)
