I need to find/install drivers that can create a virtual com port on my laptop so that I can use a usb cable. I have found some like from Prolific but I can't use it. I have also came across some other that I have installed but it hasn't helped.

    Virtual COM Port Drivers

Does anyone know any working drivers for Windows 7 that can help creating a cirtual com port?

go to device manager and look at the hardware id. You need to find the maker and chip it uses.

What like a USB to COM Serial adapter? I've never needed special drivers for mine. I just let windows use it's built in generic ones and presto!

    Thanks all for your replies,
everytime I plug the usb cable in, the device manager shows it as a Prolific type.
Just installed the Signotec driver but it doesn't help either.
I have even let Windows to find the proper driver for it, but it ends up choosing the Prolific and at the end it says it can't update the driver.

I have tried those Prolific drivers too but for some reason is not working on my laptop, and it keeps showing an error code 10 that it can not get started.

    Maro12, try this.

    1) Unplug all unnecessary add-on hardware
    2) Open a Command Prompt window with administrative permissions
    3) Enter Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 then press Enter
    4) Enter Devmgmt.msc then press Enter. The Device Manager window should open.
    5) Click View then Show hidden devices
    6) Go down to Ports (COM & LPT) and click the arrow to the left of it to expand it
    7) Right click all the unused ports (dimmed) one at a time and left click Uninstall. If it has a check box to Delete the driver software for this device, don't check it.
    8) After deleting all the unused ports, close the Device Manager window and reboot
    9) Plug in your USB to Serial adapter and it should reinstall it automatically.

That's strange. It should be showing all the times a COM or PRT port was created on your system.

Not that I can think of. This has always worked for me on XP and 7, both 32 and 64. Haven't had a chance to test it though on 8.

Do you know your serial adapter itself properly works? Try it out on another system and see if it works on that one.

I think the best way to solve it, is to reinstall Windows and the drivers, as I am also experiencing my laptop to function some how unusual. The browser and other programs like Word, pdf files that are open flickers/shakes and I have to minimize them in order to get access to other programs that are already open, something which I haven't encountered before. I have ran antivirus and antispyware programs and the computer is still behaving the same.
