I've never found these types of programs very useful, as I always keep the latest driver installation programs on an external backup device, arranged by the proper installation order. However, I did a quick install (read the install.txt file, otherwise you will end up with the 15 day trial instead of the registered version) and it read my system and dumped the drivers to a location I specified. I didn't try to restore those drivers, so I don't know how well those backups actually perform.

The driver update utility found a few drivers that were out of date, but in reality I have the latest drivers installed from either Dell or the manufacturer. I read quite a few of the comments left for this application, and it looks like false positives are the norm for this particular program. Perhaps it works better on a desktop; as we all know, laptops have some pretty specific drivers, and most laptop component manufacturers don't provide direct support (that's left to companies like Dell and HP), so the updates listed by this program might not actually work for a laptop. YMMV.

I installed this program and it's very good and simple to use. I choose the option to backup drivers in .exe files and then save them on my external drive. Works flawless and allows you to choose what drivers you want to backup and the ones you want to don't. Very easy to read and only shows drivers not from MS OS itself.

How about the restore? Any experience with restoring them on a brand new OS?

Works without a problem. I saved them in .exe form and tried some on a Virtual Machine. Installed drivers flawless.

I haven't tried backing up drivers any other way. I read the comments from the OP's link and it was suggested to saved in .exe form. Which makes sense to me.

This app sure beats searching on manufacturer sites for drivers.

How long did you run the VMs after driver install? I'm wondering if there are any instabilities that pop up after a few hours/days/etc.

We'll just a couple of hours, I don't see any reason for instabilities being that these are the same original drivers from my reinstall disk. This program just backs them up. So far I test the audio, touchpad, and mouse drivers. I didn't try the display drivers cause I'm not sure if it will work correctly under VMWare.
