I have an ssd as my main and just normal hdd as my second. Pretty much when I close the lid my computer goes to sleep. I like it this way but am afraid that since I move the computer around alot that the 2nd hdd could get messed up if bumped.

Just want to know so that if it's on in sleep then I should just do hibernate.

Couldn't you just put it in sleep, then place your ear next to where the hard drive is?

Well I tried that but one its in a dvd drive hdd caddy so it's kinda thick and two I don't know if the hard drive is like in some low power mode. I mean I hardly hear them now.

Putting a computer into sleep mode either turns off items/components completely or puts them in a ultra low power state (Might depend on what sleep state you use?)
Hard Drives are one of those items that will shut off.

Unless your laptop has some weird power routing issues, the hard drive should be off while the computer is sleeping.
