The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

Do any IRC clients show when you've been whois'd?

No. A whois query does not involve your IRC client at all.

I'm sure that some do. Someone got annoyed with me recently about that.

    How should this work?
Imagine, you'd make me upset for some reason, and I am able to see your IP. To get the whois information behind your IP, either I run a whois client on my PC or I am using a web based whois service. The whois client is communicating with the whois servers in question and finally displaying the results.
On that communication chain, the the other person is not involved at all.

EDIT: there seems to be some internal form of whois in IRC. This is something else than the whois I was thinking of.

Hmm.. perhaps it was because I poked other things on that user, like: ping, version, time, user-info.

I'm pretty sure it needs support from server, I've used a custom server where one of the OP's always woke up when I did /wii on her :D
