it does not do any harm, & if u have enough resources - aka beaucoup ram - leave it alone. vista is so touchy that other than the nagging uac, where one just turns off, i leave everything else alone.

    cheers ...

If you have another solution in place it won't hurt anything to turn it off.

It willl be advisable to turn it on. Another line of defence will not hurt. Windows Defender once caught a malware that none of my security solution detected.

Real-time spyware blocking is a performance drag (almost as much as actual spyware), but if you're prone to infecting computers, i'd leave it on.

Windows Defender is one of the least-effective anti-malware programs on the market. Use Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Doctor, and/or AVG Anti-Spyware instead. Stay far away from Spysweeper, any McAfee, Norton, and Trend Micro products if you care at all about the usability and general performance of your system.

I turned mine off. I've had no problems.

But then again, I don't boot Vista on my machine too often.

I just turned it off. The new AVG has anti-spyware and I haven't had anything from either of them find any spyware ever so I thought it was a waste

    Hi.

The new avg could not spot spyware if it fell over it.

    Do not trust it!

    Try Avast or Avira.

    Regards

    John.

How do you turn it off? I have it set not to automatically scan, but, other than that, I don't see how I can turn it off. =.=

    Go to run... type 'services.msc'

scroll down to 'Windows Defender' and DISABLE it & STOP it.

    Good riddance!

Windows defender is a decent real time spyware protection program. So it's advisable to keep it ON unless if you have any other security suite / real time AS running.

I thought I would post that I have (at least temporarily) changed my mind and restarted Windows Defender on my Vista Home Premium (SP1) notebook.
