    Hi,

I've been surfing and trying to figure out which defragmentor would be the best to use for my new computer (XP Home OS). So far I've read conflicting reviews about SpeedDisk, but am under the impression it may have serious issues with OS changes. Diskeeper seems to be the most popular but looking at all the reviews actually doesn't compare to either PerfectDisk or O&O Defrag. I kknow there are others out there but I've narrowed it down to these since reviews are lacking for any of the others. At first I thought I had narrowed it down to the latter two, but the following review with performance benchmarks confused me:

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1599920,00.asp

The fact of the matter is I don't care how long it takes because I can easily run it/schedule it at night. The way I see it is that the main reason to even defrag a disk in the first place is performance and that's all I really care about (the price difference isn't big enough to me to matter).

The only other benchmarks I saw were from the O&O site's whitepaper which only compared O&O to Diskeeper:

    http://www.oo-software.com/en/products/oodefrag/OODefragV6_WhitePaper.pdf

I'm interested in hearing people's opinions, particularly if anyone has any experience with the latest versions of both PerfecDisk and O&O. If SpeedDisk really is the best performer, than is there really a reason not to go with that - i.e. does it really cause the problems others have complained about? Does anyone know of any other benchmark tests that were done anywhere?

    Thanks in advance,
    MFI

Of the products you listed above, I only used diskeeper before. In fact I am currently running diskeeper 8 right now and everything seem pretty smooth. I really like the "set it and forget it" mode. The layout seem clear enough for anyone to understand and the price is also pretty good. From what I see right now, diskeeper 8 is listed around 15 bux at Staples(still out of stock) but there's one listed on amazon.com(office max i think), diskeeper 9, the newest version for around 18 bux or so. Hopefully more people here can provide you with feedback to the other two models. Good Luck.

How about the built in defragger in XP? You can schedule it using Task Scheduler. It's just a basic defragger though.

    Someone did this below:

Hi - I settled on PerfectDisk because I find it the easier of the 2 to use and trying O&O 2 times in a row seemed to suggest that the first run didn't do much while with PD it flew threw it the second time without any further changes.

    Thanks,
    MFI
