Well, i have used a few different Disk Defrags over time, such as Diskeeper, Perfect Disk, Auslogics and O&O.

However, i want to know which you think is best for overall performance when the defrag is done? (this doesnt have to include the 4 i mentioned)

To give reason to this, i would pick auslogics first for it's speed and it works pretty well too. Then after that, i'd go for JKDefrag which is very powerful and pretty okay on speed.

I like JKDefrag, though Auslogics is also pretty good.

Ok, thanks for all the replies.

But you cant just say that its good. I feel that having a too fast disk defrag means that it doesnt do much of a thurough job.

Is there any Defrag comparison site which tells you the performance increase (or even decrease) of the sytem after the defrag.

Unless your computer is really fragmented, defragging your computer doesn't have to take hours and hours. For instance, since I defrag regularly, it only takes a few minutes for JKDefrag to finish. You're probably used to Window's built-in defrag program which is very slow. Defragging does not have to be slow to be effective. So far, the only defrag program which actually appeared to speed up my computer was JKDefrag which is why I recommended it. It's not some enormous difference, it's a slight one. Although this is probably due to computer not being very fragmented.

    Here's why I like JKDefrag:

    -Fast
    -Noticeable, albeit slight, performance increase
-Many options (Manual scan, can program scan to run in background, can schedule defrags, can run from CD & flashdrive, or can have it run during screen saver)
-Small (I only use the manual defrag program and it takes up 224 KB)
-Doesn't hog resources (I can actually use my computer while it's running)
-Can stop at any time without any problems
    -Free

Another thing to note is that it works best in safe mode where it also runs slower.

Hey guys, just was slightly confused in that is Windows defragmenter really that bad ?i.e. its not been mentioned. I know its a longer process, but does it do its job properly and effectively? Or are the programs mentioned more effective and better at defragging?

Eh? What do you mean? That other programs are better defraggers than Windows Defragmenter?

All defragmenting programs have to use the same interfaces to do the defragmentation, which means that the end result is going to be very close to the same no matter which one you run. Defragmenting is a good idea, but it doesn't really affect much more than loading files. It won't make your computer actually run any faster, it'll just make hard drive accesses a little more efficient. The most important thing is to make sure your swap file and registry files aren't fragmented... the rest, just running the Windows defragger will keep your drive about as efficient as possible. You'll see a bigger benefit on slower RPM drives as well.

My vote goes to Diskeeper. It's the defragger I like most.
BTW, defragging should also help prolong the life of a HDD because a well-defragmented drive would have to do less work in the long term compared to a heavily fragmented drive (I dont have statistics to prove this, but just what seems to be logical IMHO). Besides the probability of data recovery is also much improved in the case of an HDD crash if the files are contiguous rather than scattered around the drive.

I'm sure that picture on Auslogics homepage has been nicked from one of Dell UK's computer brochures. That was an advert for the Inspiron 1520 actually, seems like they've edited out the 'Dell' logo lol.
