Or is last year's Windows 8.1 installation media still the latest?

Will a standard Windows 8 (not 8.1) product key work with these .ISO files if I need to do a reinstall? I ask because that's what my parents' desktop computer has, and it was a nightmare getting it updated to 8.1.1.

    That's odd.

I thought it doesn't accept W8 key during installation.
However, you can activate with a W8 once you get past that part.

Ah, I see the date ....

I guess I go try that out.

I just assumed the OP talked about a computer with W8 preinstalled. I don't remember what the procedure is for reinstalling in that situation, but if you got W8 separately you need a default key at first during the start of the installation.

There are tons of installation guides available, for different kind of situations.

But if you have an MSDN account, why not just use an MSDN product key?

Not too many failed hard drives so far but I had one Windows 8.0 machine that I replaced the hdd and installed Win8.1. It did not activate from the bios, nor with the key extracted from the bios. I had to source 8.0 install discs and then update to 8.1 afterwards.

As usual it was kinda urgent so I didn't have time to try different approaches. If I had time, I would have tried something other than sourcing 8.0 discs asap :)
