Can someone please suggest a program that I can use to rip DVDs to my laptop so I don't have to keep track of the discs when I travel? It'd be nice if I could copy over to new discs, too, since some of my older movies are beginning to get a little scratchy and finicky with age. (I might copy some of my friends DVDs too... don't tell the MPAA :p )

By the way, I tried Sonic (which came with my computer) but it gave me some junk about copy protection, which really ticks me off since I paid for the movie and should really be able to copy it if I want to.

Have you tried Google? Out of the billion hits you'll get I'm sure you can find some suitable software to rip DVDs. You might want to check out doom9.org as well.

I'll ignore that last little part you said since copying movies you don't own is very much frowned upon...

    Look for DVDFabDecrypter

I use FairUse Wizard for copy and converting DVD to regular avi format.

Is it really? I mean, just on the level of borrowing from friends? It's hardly what I'd call pirating. It's technically illegal to tape a tv show and give the tape to your own mother, if I'm not mistaken, since you're only permitted to tape things for your own personal use. I don't think there's anything wrong with copying a handful of movies from a few of my friends, but maybe my opinion isn't as common as I think it is.

    Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

(and yeah, I have, of course, tried Google, but there's so much and I'm so unfamiliar with it all, I thought it would be a better use of my time to see what people thought was good before I try something)

Slysoft makes a program called anydvd, I have had good luck with it and it is kept up to date. 21day free trial then like $20 for licence to keep it.

There is no detailed account, but he did make my heart skip a beat as I contemplated the likelihood that there was actually a way the MPAA could be informed of something I claimed that I might do in the future. The link is for reporting organizations that make copies of discs and sell them.

Yeah, but warlord had me thinking the community around here might be really anti-piracy so I was pretty worried for a second there. It was a pretty dull day up till then.

We are anti-piracy. For the protection of the site and the users, such topics are kept of the forums.

Yeah NBR is anti-piracy. The reason behind this is that NBR would have to give the MPAA info on users if they ever asked for it. So in other words it is for your own safety. Ask these questions in a chat room with people you trust. :p

    BTW I use DVDshrink.

The best software for what you want to do is to use DVDFAB HD Decrytor. It's amazing. ;)
That's kind of weak, you guys should stick up for yourselves like the pirate bay, then again this is a humble notebook community so i guess i can see where this is coming from. :p
