For some reason my Sony HC48 camcorder will say it is recognized by my laptop but then I go to Windows Movie Maker and it says that it cannot find DV device..I know I have all the drivers installed because it says everything is good to go when it installs the drivers by itself. My camcorder doesn't even list in My Computer. Vista sucks..I didn't have any problems like this in XP..so can anyone please point me to a solution because I really need to get this video edited with Adobe After Effects CS3=[

You don't say how you are trying to connect it.

Either way Vista shipped with more drivers than any OS in history. Something like 1.4 million. I think it's up to 2.1 million now. Make sure you have the latest driver for your firewire port and check your camera manufacturers site for Vista drivers.

Oh oops. I am using USB 2.0. I know I have the latest drivers as well for it. I connect it. It says ready to use. I go on Windows Movie Maker to try to import the video. I get an error saying that no DV camcorder it connected. I tried it with Sony Vegas 7 as well.

I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly most video cameras won't transfer video over USB. They only transfer still pictures. They use firewire for video transfer. This would explain your problem. I have a JVC miniDV and it functions the same way.

Nah. I can capture the video on my desktop with USB easily but not my laptop.

Use something else other than Windows Movie Maker to import the video.

But isn't it unusual that my camcorder doesn't even list on My Computer? That's is like the biggest thing that bothers me.

Does your camera have a memory stick location? Do you have a stick in it? If not, then there is no memory for the computer to see as a drive.

My camcorder does have a memory stick in it. I'll try it without the memory card but I don't think it will do any good as I didn't have to go through that on my 5 year old desktop.

The sony manual for your camcorder (page 73) says the following about "Your Computer does not recognize the camcorder" - Install the Picture Motion Browser software.

BTW, there is an updated version released on 6/25/07 on their site.
