This issue started with my confusion – and ends in an (due to Microsoft) imperfect solution.

First of all, this entry is thanks to Fonduekid and niGht kiD who found the appropriate link. Therefore - please rep them if you find this useful.
(Also posted in my “Outlook icon quest thread” called “Outlook Icon missing” ;)

Some people may get annoyed by this – but Outlook (in Office 2007) does not display an Outlook Icon on the Desktop.
This may be impractical for some people – especially when you use Outlook for your daily work/communication/updates. In this case you want fast access to Outlook – yes, quickstart will enable it, but its not ideal.

Restore Outlook 2007 desktop icon in XP
    ________________________________________
Does anyone know if the method used to restore the Outlook 2003 desktop icon in Windows XP will work for Outlook 2007 as well? The method is outlined below. Note: I'm not referring to a desktop shortcut icon, but the real Outlook icon that allows access to Outlook settings when right-clicked.

    Outlook 2003:

    Restore the Outlook Desktop Icon

In order to be Windows XP certified, Outlook 2003 doesn't install a desktop icon. To access the properties dialog you can either right click on the icon pinned to the start menu or open the Mail applet in Control Panel.
If you really want a desktop icon, you can re-create it by adding a key to the registry.
    1. Open the Registry Editor. Navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace
    2. Click Edit | Add Key and add the following key: {00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Quit the Registry Editor. Refresh the desktop to see the restored icon. You may need to log off windows and log back on to see the icon.
A tip from a reader: "If you receive errors, try changing the default value under {00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} to 3. The change of the default value stopped the errors here on the few machines running Outlook 2003."
***Outlook 2003 users can drag the Start menu icon to the desktop -- while the icon has a shortcut arrow on it, right-click on it to reach the Properties menu.***

I have used this method for Outlook 2007 – using “default value 3”.
It does not seem to cause any problems on my machine.
Of course – I can’t take responsibility for any problems due to this information and accept no responsibility.

Thanks again to Fonduekid and niGht kiD who found the relevant information.

I thought it would be good to put it in a thread and copy the original information. (with the source of course)

But its you two, you Funduekid and niGht kiD who deserve the credit! :)
