Could Modded BIOS with changed default value HT (Hyper-Threading) disabled brick my laptop or it is just a bad flash? Sony VAIO F

    You see the question.

I modde BIOS to unlock some settings, then I flashed it and all was fine except most of settings still were hied.

So I edited more and also decided to disable HT in Default values.
After I flashed it again my lappy doesn't bood and has black screen. Good point is that it tries to launch. I see green LED on Power button, LED on USB pendrive and HDD LED blinking and when I push ASSIST button + AnyKey It launches and all the same except when I release AnyKey I see backlit keyboard lights.

    No BIOS/APTIO recovery helps.

So I ask if it could be a problem with HT? I read somewhere here that if you set wrong values like HT which isn't supported then you will not recover BIOS even with USB pendrive.

    My CPU is I7-740QM.

Can I just try to put CPU without HT and will it work?

Hard to say without extensively looking through the BIOS code. What steps did you take to try and recover?

Recover: 1 guy found a name in my original BIOS. Also original name and other names. Also changed extensions and modifications of shortened names I told above.

I put all files on FAT 1GB and FAT32 2GB flashdrives (2GB is a cardreader with 2GB SD card actually and it is bootable with boot files (3 files)).

I unplugged CMOS battery. Pushed Ctr+Home, Win+Esc, and many other combinations. I also used Assist button instead of Power but nothing.

Also I took away all RAM and tried to launch. In 10-15 seconds after I pushed power button laptop's fan started to blow 100%. I saw solid light on Flashdrive USB after I put it in. But nothing.

After removing all RAM and then putting it back I saw slight change.

At first when I push power button I saw light on USB pendrive and HDD LED blinking every 3-5 seconds and fan blew and stopped same 3-5 seconds. Like it reboots.
After removing RAM fan stops every 9-15 seconds while LED flashes every same 3-5 seconds.

Used to rename BIOS file in SUPER.rom too. And of course this useless AMIBOOT.ROM but I know that APTIO needs exact filename.

    Here is attached image. [IMG]

Later I will add a original ROM, Saved/Backed up ROM and last modded BIOS rom files.

I just afraid that BootBlock of VAIO doesn't contain recovery options at all. Is it possible?

Also I am not able to shorten 2 pins or 1 pin on BIOS chip because it is too complicated. I afraid it is on another side of MOBO which can be accessed only removing keyboard and other.

0ABPZ015.rom would have been my wild guess, seems you've tried it already. Sony recovery seems more difficult/unknown than others.

Another filename you could try is AmiCapUp but whether this is a BIOS file or something else idk. If you exhaust all other possibilities then you'll be left with either send to Sony for repair, they may charge you for a new mainboard or order a new BIOS chip preferably pre-flashed and get someone or yourself to remove the old one and resolder in the new one.

    Hi James,

Have you successfully recover the BIOS?

    No, I did not.

I tried to find BIOS chip today but I did not. There was only 1 chip which looked like it npce783la0dx nuvoton. I did not see any square chip and big enough to be a BIOS.

I also tried to use DIP switches but they are for screen only :( I tried to force Fail-Safe defaults to boot.

I can try to put a non-HT Nehalem cpu like p6200.

Also I found that CD/DVD disks start to round very fast but I did not see a blinking diod of reading. But I did not let it to spin a lot. I have no unscratched CD or DVD.

It seems you have to exchange the motherboard, very expensive.

Hey people. I HAVE RECOVERED IT. I did it last week or so. As you see it took 9 months to find a good guy who agreed to help me with I2C flashing (soldering and desoldering BIOS chip and program it). Previous ____er just told me the same thing for months "yeah man, I will help you. Just call me tomorrow".

If you want to know how did it happened you can read this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...s-owners-thread-part-6-a-265.html#post8821954

If you want to know how to create proper BIOS image ask me or read this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...s-owners-thread-part-6-a-264.html#post8819332
You will need bios backup or (even better) bios dump file from the chip.
Will create How To thread later.
