XP or Vista?..not sure of the steps in Vista but for XP go to Start--->Right click on 'My Network Places' and go to 'Properties'. Right click on the Connection and go to Properties. Put in the checks at the bottom of the screen that says "Show icon in notification...." and "Notify me when.....". Press ok.

^ he/she means go to the individual properties of each connection...Wired NIC...Wireless NIC...and check the two boxes show when connected...and show when limited or no connection...
