I'm looking to maximize the performance of my laptop. What are some good hardware and software maintenance programs I can download (THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE FREE).

I am looking for programs to:

    -maximize CPU performance
    -maximize HD space
-maximize the amount of RAM being used
-clean up unnecessary programs and icons (installers, updaters, etc)

And basically improve overall performance. Any advice would be appreciated (links would be outstanding)

    Thank you.

Are there any programs that help remove other extra programs and files. When I download programs from the internet, I get about 2-4 new icons on my desktop. I don't know if they can be deleted, as they are just installers and whatnot, or if I need to keep them to use the thing that I just downloaded (i.e., when you download iTunes you get a new icon, looks like a box, called "iTunes installer", you can delete it and still use iTunes, but I have deleted the installer for other programs, and then the program doesn't open) - Do you see what I mean?
So, are there any programs that can help me clean out these unnecessary files?

The installer...so the setup to install it? You can delete those fine...for any program. It's just to INSTALL it on your pc. Ccleaner, as mentioned above cleans alot of stuff that misses when you uninstall something. For iTunes, it's different, it comes with QuickTime. You NEED Quicktime on your PC for iTunes to run.

It sounds like you are downloading everything to your desktop. To prevent them from cluttering up your desktop, save them to your downloads folder instead or rename them as "program name"-installer to know which ones you can delete. As for all the icons, don't just keep clicking "next" when you install things. Usually one of the screens will ask if you want to place shortcuts on the desktop and then you can tell it not to.
    Hope that helps

I have heard that sometimes a PC doesn't use all the available RAM properly, or a program is using more RAM than it should. What can I download to optimize RAM performance. And thanks to McGrady and Deathstick for explaining the whole setup issue.

try www.auslogic.com for some useful free programs. Don't overdue it though. One program is best.

Download Autoruns as well to clean up some of those startup services that might bog your computer down.
