    Hello,

I want to do a clean install to Windows 7 from Vista. It is my wife's laptop. The problem is this: she used it at work, and they install office w/ powerpoint on it for her. She does not have any discs but wants to keep this software. How can I do this? Can I make some kind of partial image just for that software? Any help appreciated.

    Hello,
One way would be to retrieve the MS Office key using a tool loke magical jelly bean keyfinder. You can download it from the link below.

    http://www.magicaljellybean.com/downloads/kf141.zip

Also note down what version of MS Office is installed. See if you can download a trial version of that. You can then install that version and enter the key you noted down previously when asked for it.

make sure you stay on the right side of the law by informing the workplace of what you are doing.

    What's wrong with an upgrade?

I upgraded mine from Vista instead of a install, and it backed everything for me that was on my computer, even my Rainmeter configs. Much easier and a lot less hassle.

From what I understand, fresh installs are always the better way to go. But particularly in my case, the reason I want to make the change to Windows 7 is because her laptop is so slow, it is nearly unusable. In fact, for me, I just don't have the patience. For example, just booting Windows takes 5-10 minutes. After that, opening Internet Explorer takes 2-3.

What is the make and model number of this notebook? Just trying to figure out how old it is. Have you looked on the manufacturer's site to see if it's supported for Windows 7?

It's a vaio cr series we bought a couple years ago. Celeron 530 1.73 ghz, 1g ram, 120g hdd. It came with vista, but I am surprised how low the ram is now that I am looking at it.

Actually, after looking at it more closely last night, Office 2007 came pre-installed with the system from Sony. Now that I think about it, I think that was one of the main reasons we bought it. So, what they installed for her at her work was only the Powerpoint part.

So now the question is, how can do I extract Office 2007? Recovery disks? If so, how do I get just Office out of it? And, is there anyway I can somehow keep the Powerpoint?

You can't. Since the machine is acting so strange, your only REAL course of action is to reinstall from the Sony recovery partition or disks. Then have her office reinstall PowerPoint. The UPGRADE from Vista to Win7. See the link in my signature line below for my write up on upgrading to Win7.
