When I install a new program it shows up in the start menu as a folder rather than showing the applications icon. Is there a way to change the way applications show up in the start menu on XP.

    Thanks

Other than manually moving the shortcut out of the folder or specifying during install (some give this optoin, some dont'), there isn't a way that I know of. It's a good thing too, since most programs install and place shortcuts for the readme/uninstall/other junk into their shortcut folders also. I just manually move stuff around.
