This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    Changing file extensions in windows 8...

    I don't know what's going on but W8 is making it hard for me to get the appropriate file type on some text files, I will edit a file for instance which is a *.CFG, and if notepad++ doesn't know what a cfg file is, I will have to save it as TXT or some other. This wouldn't be a problem if windows would let me rename the file type to the appropriate extension but it doesn't. Am I missing something here?

    edit: found the answer, gotta uncheck "hide extensions for known file types"

    There is a convoluted way to do it via command line too, but that's the simplest, most practical method you have there.

    yikes. the number of keystrokes required to show/hide hidden files and known extension types has been more than cut in half and made so much more convenient in W8.
