I'd like to speed up my JkDefrag and was wondering if changing the program priority would work. What does changing the priority actually do though? My guess is just that extra system resources are allocated to the program

Changing the thread priority would put thread execution ahead of other applications. It can make cpu intensive applications run faster in a multi tasked environment say compression or encryption apps. Defrag is more hard drive than cpu intensive, a faster hard drive would speed it up :)

click CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE

you will see a list of running processes

locate the program which you want to change the priority for

    right click

    set priority

    select the desired priority

so if i increased the priority of a game would it run faster?

i know how to do it, but i was wondering what are the differences between each level ?

currently i set my program to abovenormal. realtime sounds a bit too extreme and i'm thinking of maybe setting it to high

oh sorry, i just read the thread title :(

changing priority will cause a slow down to other applications to favour the high priority selected program

Doubtful unless your really pushing the processor past 90-95% then it might give you a little headway if any other processes are using the cpu.

All computations are executed as a thread. The processor has to multi task. So the operating system manages these threads and by default trys to evenly process everything. Im not sure what threads by default have a higher priority I would guess operating system related stuff.

Changing the priority affects how the thread management decides what gets done when.

its best to never play with priority settings, the OS automatically sets priority for an applicatoin as per the demand, for example, a defrag program usually gets higher priority

You'll need to set the disk proiority highier, not the process priority.

Changing the priority where, from within the app's configuration, or by messing directly with the OS?
