Here's one way - by writing an icon handler extension - as discussed in this CodeProject webpage.

BTW, do you "sue" VLC, or do you just "use" VLC? :D

You're going to LOVE this :p --- quick and easy, and it doesn't require any extra software:

On Desktop, click once on the icon you want to change (highlight it), and right click on it
    Choose: Properties
    Choose: Change Icon
Browse to either one of the following links:
    C:\Windows\system 32/imageres.dll OR
    C:\System 32/Shell32.dll
You will see thumbnails of approximately 75 different icons. Click on the one you want
    Click: OK
    Click: Apply
    Click: OK

And, you're done. If you don't like your choice, you can go back and do it again and again, trying out all kinds of icons.

PS, every once in a while a change just doesn't take. Don't know why, but you just have to select another icon and go from there.
