I just received my laptop yesterday and its got the dreaded windows 8 on it.

When I set it up, it made me use my hotmail account as my user id with the same password, is there a way for me to change the password on the user account, but keep my old password for my email address?

Not sure. Haven't dealt with Windows 8 just yet. If you click on "All Apps" then go into the Windows System category, there should be the control panels shortcut there. In control panels you will look for your Users or User Accounts control panel. That would be where you can change your login password.

Yes, I was able to get to the user accounts page to change the password, but it also ended up changing the password for my email address too. What I would like to do is change the password for the user account but not for my email, is there a way to un-link my email from my user account?

argh, windows 8 is a headache.

Ahhh! So you want to switch to a Local Account? Me Sabe, me sabe.

Take a look here and follow the steps given: Local Account - Switch to in Windows 8

PS: Windows 8 is more like a MIGRAINE!

When you set up an email address, the OS will pair your Windows login info with your email (sync) automatically. I think if you register with Microsoft, it will automatically do this as well for whatever info you set up during their registration process (supposedly, anyway; had somebody call because they suddenly had a password on reboot, and they didn't know what it was; when they punched in the password for what they provided to MS during registration, they were able to log into Windows).

But as radji mentioned, you can use a local account (login info is stored strictly on the machine and not synced to anything cloud/other accounts).

ah, so satisfying to know that i've had a live id/microsoft account linked to my personal email for the better part of ten years, and that W8 is such a migraine for some people. that's what happens when you're late to the party!

No, it didn't. It encouraged you to do so, but the option to use a local account was likely presented as well (with a lot of bullet points saying why not to)

Convert your account to a local account.

It was presented, I remember that much, In fact, the admin account on my windows 8 drive is a local account and it was the first I created.
