Ive set my sound scheme to "no sounds" but I still get an incredibly annoying noise everytime I raise/lower the music.

How do I turn that off?

Also...is their no way to change the playback device on the fly? I wouldve have thought that they would remedy this with 7.

As you have set the sound scheme to no sounds (or something similar), then I can't really see the need for the 'System Sounds' being unmuted. If you left-click the sound icon in the system tray, and go to the mixer, it will display an entry called 'System Sounds'. This will allow you to mute all the sounds that Windows makes, without muting any applications.

To change playback device on the fly, right click the speaker icon in the system tray, choose Playback devices, then right-click the device you wish to use and 'Set as Default Device'.
Unlike Vista, the sound will immediately change to the selected output.
