    Hi there,

I have an Asus G1 - bought in December last year - and I have finally, today, decided to upgrade to Vista Home Premium using the disc sent to me that will replace my XP Media OS; both 32bit.

I have followed all the instructions but I get an error message not listed on Microsofts Support page:

'Upgrade has been disabled - the compliance checks could not be performed'.

My hard drive is NTFS as it needs to be and the Vista Advisor records that everything is fine.

I do have the Clean install option available but that is just too much of a hassle for me to even contemplate. Has anyone had the same error message and, if so, how did you overcome it?

    Cheers,
    Stuart.

What version of XP are you using? AFAIK you cannot upgrade to any "home" Vista from an XP professional.

I am using XP Media Center Edition with Service Pack 2.

My laptop has a Core2 T7200 processor and 2GB ram.

I was sent a disc from Asus as part of their Vista Upgrade program because I purchased my laptop last year and I didn't upgrade right away. Now I have decided to install it and...can't. The Window's Support Center has a list of error messages but none match the error about compliance - the closest refers to the need for NTFS, which I have and both partitions on my HDD have nearly 30GB free space.

    According to MS:

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

    • The operating system that is currently installed on the computer is not supported in the upgrade path to Windows Vista.

    • You did not start the computer by using the current operating system. Instead, you started the computer from the Windows Vista DVD. To resolve this issue, start the computer by using the current operating system, and then run the Setup program from the current operating system.

    • The operating system is installed to a partition that uses the FAT32 file system. To resolve this issue, convert the file system on the partition to use the NTFS file system. • The partition on which you want to upgrade to Windows Vista has insufficient free hard disk space. To resolve this issue, free additional space on the hard disk. Hi again,

I've managed to get to the actual install but...upgrade or clean install I get the following error message code : 0x80070017

Is this fatal? Is the disk damaged/ corrupted?

Can I fix something to get it to work?

    Answers on a postcard...

damaged disk it means it failed the CRC (cyclical redundancy check)

Thank you for your help :)

I take it this means I have to acquire a new disk then from Asus ?

What a pain...I tried a clean install and wiped my laptop of XP so I have had to re-install it now.

Oh well, guess I'll put my laptop back to how it was.

I should not have been so abrupt--it could also mean the disc has a smudge on it...try cleaning it with a soft cloth and some soap and water--it means that the file cannot be read (failed CRC), but it is possible that you just have a blemish on the disc that can be cleaned.

Thanks, I'll clean the disc and see if it helps - I'll try calling Asus again but have had little luck with Microsoft/Asus today so far.

Is your MCE a legit copy? Try to load the disc AFTER booting and running, it will usually ask if you want to upgrade or clean install. Sometimes it will only give you one choice. Be prepared to upgrade, it will take a long while to do so. Good luck.

It is legit - it was pre-installed on my Asus G1 laptop that I purchased from MilestonePC in December last year.

I've tried everything now and run CDCheck and it tells me the disk sent to me is riddled with CRC errors.
As a result of my trying to get Vista installed, I ended up running my MCE Recovery disk to repair my OS due to a problem I encountered attempting to get a clean install from booting via the Vista Upgrade disk. I now have a wonderfully clean XP MCE instead!

I've updated my XP again and everything is running great but no Vista. Should I give up?

I even downloaded VLite but not at all sure if this can help me in any way.

I'm quite happy to use the Vista Upgrade option from within Windows - it just fails all the time with the CRC problem. I thought a Clean install might prove more fruitful but no. I guess I need Asus to send me a new disk but that will be a huge pain, I'm sure.

Wouldn't hurt to ask ASUS for the disc. Weird how you get a CRC error for an installation. Something must be wrong with the upgrade disc. Have you checked with the Windows compatibilty program if your comp is able to handle Vista? Could be something that's blocking the installation. MCE is a fine OS.

The disc is indeed a bad copy - I found 242 errors using CDCheck.

I've asked Asus for a new one and await their response.
