It's downright stupid that I can't run this thing to tweak UAC even though I'm the only account on my system (Administrator). I follow the instructions in my help and support program and all windows does is give me an error message saying it can't find the file! I'm sure the stupid UAC setting stops me from writing files into my Users\(User Name)\AppData\Local\Temp folder since I could previously until earlier on this month.

Anyone have any ideas on what's going on? Or does Vista Basic not have this feature?

Bloody hell. Thanks for the help. It probably doesn't help now that I've uninstalled the troublesome demo that couldn't access the folder in my opening post.

Another question: Microsoft claims group policy is available via an add-on. Is it possible to download it and enable the feature in Vista Basic?

correct, keep in mind that group policy management structure has gone thru a big overhaul under vista (new marketing and chances to make extra bucks). This is in line with the many offered versions, putting end users in more pre.defined groups for licencing purposes.

i doubt that m$ offers this possibility for vista basic. they did not do it for xp home. i would say that any version lower than vista business will be sol on this. would not be surprised that some registry tweaks are available to work around this

    cheers ...

Damn. Just as well I'm looking to upgrade to Ultimate x64 in the near future. Hopefully none of the retail games I'm planning to purchase will force me to have go through this extremely tedious and convoluted process.

 i would be very wearying if any apps/games require access to group policy area, unless it is specifically stated in the system requirements. u have an example?

    cheers ....

Might be a misdiagnosis, but if an application is not allowed to write a bug report to your AppData/local/temp directory I would assume it was due to UAC and group policy restrictions.

could it be that the app was installed under another profile, and run under another ?

    cheers ...

    App: Supreme Commander Demo
Settings: Installed under my account (only one on PC) and run with Service Pack 2 compatibility and administrator mode.

Like my related earlier threads posted in November it worked fine for a while then developed stability problems. I think I've narrowed the culprit down to UAC and group policy.

i see that u have posted specific thread on this under Gaming section as well.
impressed that u got it to play this far, many gamers reported zero success under vista, either under admin or xp compatible mode.

    what is ur current patch?

could not find anything relating ur specific query under uac and group policy within the SC user group in gamewelt, sorry.

    cheers ...

Biggest joke of all is that I'm playing the DEMO version. No patch available and it worked like a charm for at least 10 days. Thanks for looking up the specific error message for me under the other forum, it's appreciated.

I'm really starting to wonder if getting the game next year when I go home is such a good idea if the full version isn't fully compatible with Vista.

When you install the game and the first time you run it, start the process with run as administrator.
