So, I have a Windows XP disc, but it won't boot up in my laptop. At all.

I have set it to boot from the disc, and the drive spins up, but all I get is a blank screen with _ on it

I can boot the CD up in another 2 laptops and a computer, so the disc is fine. Obviously it's the DVD drive on this laptop.

However, I can boot up a Windows 7 disc (every time), and even an OSX disc. Once in Windows, the drive is fine, and I can even see the XP disc with all the files on there

Earlier, I had the drive set to AHCI, and I finally got the disc to the "press any key to boot from disc" screen, but this was no good as I didn't have SATA drivers integrated. I then set it to compatibility mode, and tried again, but the disc wouldn't boot. Set it back to AHCI and tried again, but no joy. I then tried with the Windows 7 disc and it worked fine

It spins up, I tried turning it on, pressing F12 (to bring up the boot source menu) and then putting the disc in, waiting for it to spin up and then pressing enter to boot from the disc, but I get nothing

It doesn't even get to the "press any key to boot from disc" screen.

I can't even think what's wrong, as the disc works on other computers, but other discs work on this compter

Have you tried setting the boot order in BIOS to only:

    1) DVD drive
    2) Internal HD

Do you have an external USB CD drive you could try booting it from?
