When i try to use the winodws XP built in defrag it just stops and say "not all files could be defrag" WHen i try with Iobit smart defrag the defrag goes straight from 0 to 100% and it says its complete but it has not defragged any files. This used to work fine but now for some reason i cant defrag anymore :S

I tried using dskchk and than defrag but didnt work, than i booted in safe mode but it still didnt work. Anyone have any idea why now i cant defrag anymore? Its really annoying since i am a defrag freak and need to keep my computer clean at all times.

I can try, but so far Iobit smart defrag, windows xp defrag and tune xp defrag has not worked. I just run chkdskat start up and it deleted a file over 1000 times. It was the same file and than it just stopped and jumped to windows. I hate my hard disk it sucks. I think my whole lame laptop is broken.

I doubt this is the problem but..... Do you have enough free space on your HD? You need some free space in order to defrag.

Since you ran check disk and that is not working... Did you try system restore? (I also think this probably won't help).

Have you had problems with your hard drive before? If it is faulty I'm sure it is writing and reading important windows files incorrectly. If everything else is functioning besides defrag though, it might just be a software problem.

I have enough space and clen my laptop with CC cleaner and Advanced system care 1 time each day. Sometimes i can defrag a little bit but the whole defrag finishes in just a few seconds.

CC cleaner doesn't need hd space. In fact it frees up space. Defrag is a different process. It involves moving files from one spot to another. and to do this it needs free space to temporarily put the files. I'm not sure on the amount of free space you need to run defrag, but for some reason 15G rings a bell. Make sure you have enough free space. Check it to make sure.

its 15% free space and i know what everything does, i meant that i am a computer clean freak so i keep everything organized and clean. I have abot 50 GB left of total 120.

Maybe my system is just so clean that sometimes it only takes a few seconds to derfrag the whole thing?

Except, a defragging software doesn't mop your hard-disk.

I know with JKDefrag, anytime you immediately defrag after the first time, it only takes about 10 seconds to defrag.

The builtin Windows defragmenter is crap. use Diskeeper instead. It defragments automatically in the background so that you don't even notice it. You can do anything while it is running, like play a hardware demanding game. Recommended by this site.

If the volume has been marked as dirty, then defrag will not even start until chkdsk is finished, but by and itself, chkdsk will not help improve the quality of a defrag. chkdsk is only for scanning and recovering from file system errors.

Safe mode also does not help much in defrag from XP onwards. It was useful only on Windows ME and earlier.

There are a a couple of possibilities why your defrag is not running 'properly'
-no fragmentation, so there is nothing to defrag. Check the defrag analysis report and that will give you a clear idea of the situation on the disk

-fragmented system files. The XP and other 'free' defraggers cannot defrag the MFT and some other metadata, so they just quit after defragging what they can. Again, check the defrag report.

-insufficient free space, but that does not seem to be the situation in your case.

You can also download the trial version of a good defragger like Diskeeper 2009 pro and install it. It will run free for a month as a fully functional defragger, so you have plenty of time. I use DK2008 Pro and I am currently testing the 2009 version on one of my XP desktop systems and it defrags all files. Automatically too, even with less than 7% disk space.

There are certain files, like Pagefile.sys that no defrag is ever going to reorganize while the OS i running. I am betting that the report you are getting about "some files were not..." is one of this type of file. If the OS is using the file the defrag can't mess with it.

Try a boot disk and defagging with the native OS not running.

If you also set your pagefile to a specific size (like 2gigs) instead of a range. You won't have to defrag your computer as often.
