Yes you can, you will require specially designed operating systems(modified systems). One such as a linux system. I don't suggest using a usb version of windows. Look up mandriva linux, they sell their usb+their operating system on the usb.

Yea, my dad showed me how to do it one time with linux. I think it was a red-hat or something. W/e it is, its in an extrememly small computer that dosn't have room for a cd-drive.

If your bios will allow booting from a flash drive yes.

Yep, like Chris said, first thing first, your BIOS has to support it. Remember the boot sequence, where you can arrange which device your BIOS will look for the OS first (in older machine, usually floppy, then CD-ROM, then HDD). In newer machine the BIOS let you choose USB or network.

No, you can't. You know, I'm pretty sure there are at least two other "usb OS boot" threads, and all of these questions have been asked and answered. Have you looked around for any of them?

There are also guides available on the 'net that explain exactly how to install an operating system on a flash drive.

I've tried with a few different OS's. The one that worked the best was Damn Small Linux.

Yes you can. As mentioned there are one or two threads discussing this. Search here or online for PendriveLinux, USB Flash Boot, USB Linux boot, etc. There is even a way to use a floppy drive and syslinux to have the laptop run the OS from a pendrive, even if the BIOS does not allow USB booting, using a boot floppy image with USB support.
