In order to save some money when ordering a new computer from Xotic PC, I was wondering if my current copy of Windows 7 is able to be installed on a new machine. It is an OEM version and the product key is stickied to the bottom of my current notebook (Macbook pro w/ Bootcamp) for activation.

So basically, if I delete the Windows 7 partition on my computer will I be able to use the same OEM disc and activation code to install it a new one? Thanks

If that isn't a factory created windows 7 your should be able to but the part that would catch you is when you update and M$ blacklist your registration key they you will be stuck with a OEM that can't verify it's registration. But if you already registered your key with M$ and if they see a different verification they might blacklist your key. So is your new PC a PC laptop or Mac? And are you dual booting or ??? How would you get a windows key on a Mac I haven't seen that and M$ most likely wouldn't let that fly. If you took the sticker off you would rip it to pieces as it was made to stick once and not be removed. A little more info on your setup would also help as well.

Licence is a permit to use someone's software. It is not ownership of the software. You pay in order to use someone's software. OEM is the most limited usage right (licence).

MS OEM licence lives and dies with the hardware. Cannot be transferred to another hardware legally. Sticker is on the hardware and the licence is legal only on that piece of hardware (laptop). Also OEM licence cannot be upgraded (so you cannot buy Upgrade version of new Windows and upgrade current OEM version). If you have Office OEM licence the rule is the same.

Fullpackage (retail) and all volume licensing programs with permanent ownership of the licences allow transferring and in some cases even running copies on work and home computers, multiple virtual instances etc...

Not OP's case, but I just remembered...One thing people don't know is that you don't have to use discs from the laptop manufacturer. Usually those discs come with all the drivers but also bloatware. You can legally go to MS servers and download ISO of the same version and edition that your laptop is licensed too and LEGALLY use your key on your laptop. Comes in handy with overbloated brand laptops.
