Yes you can, but if you want to greatly increase the performance you should consider upgrading your RAM to at least 1Gig if not 2Gigs.

The minimum requirements are as follows:
    1GHz processor (32- or 64-bit)
    1GB of main memory
    16GB of available disk space
Support for DX9 graphics with 128MB of memory (for the Aero interface)
    A DVD-R/W drive

I would suggest partitioning off around 20GB - 30GB and stick Win7 on that partition so you can dual-boot XP and Win7. Incase Win7 doesn't turn out to be to your liking, then you simply delete the partion and keep using XP.

Windows7 works fine on older hardware.
I am running it on an IBM Thinkcentre M50 with an 80gig hard drive, 3Ghz HT P4 processor and 2Gig of ram. My system also has a 256Mhz ATI graphics card.
With this hardware Windows7 gives the system a score of 3.4 which is the the graphics card that is the lowest. All the other hardware and memory score in the 4's and 5's, which for an old system is not bad.

Windows7 runs the full Aero desktop on this system and does so quite easily.

So, no problems with your system except as has been stated, you might just want to up the Ram a bit to 2Gigs to make it all smooth.

    Cheers
