I want to go back to XP on my laptop (I am selling it), and install my Vista Home Premium on the desktop I am building.

    Is this legal?
Will it cause problems forcing me to call MS?

Looks like I finally typed the right phrase into google and found this:

So it looks like that is answered.

Now I would still like to know if it will cause problems requiring a phone call (although I do think they are open 24/7).

For vista I can't say. If you install a copy of XP on 2 or 3 different computers (one after the other of course) it rquires a call. Be prepared to have to call them from what I have heard of Vista's security issues. One would hope you wouldn't have to.

For Vista if it's a full retail license then yes I believe you can.

If it's an OEM license that was on the laptop when you got it, then no, you can't (legally)

Arla is exactly right. An OEM license would be tied to the machine that it came on, but a retail license can be changed to a different machine.

    well....

    If it's oem you COULD...

Make a digital locker at the digital locker site (do this first)

Then buy a anytime upgrade to ultimate.

That will take care of your oem problems. It would also be a bit cheaper then buying ultimate later on (Go the sams club route, $149).
