Hi everyone, how many of you out there use an internet optimization software such as cable nut? is it effective? please elaborate.. thanx

i stay away from all "optimizer" apps like web optimizers, memory optimizers, etc. i'd wager that loading all that crap in the background actually reduces your performance overall. plus it's just more junk on your HD.
i suggest keeping your system clean, your LAN topology efficient, and you'll already be "optimized" -
Most of the time you are paying for bandwidth you are not using anyway.
-
watch it when u r using broadband with XP. many optimization tweaks out there are still relying/based on W2K.
XP itself has improved and has pretty much already taken in consideration of maximizing tcp/ip performance.
a nice reading at:

i was hesitant at first about using it but it did no harm. I get download speeds of ~200 Kbs on my 512 connection now when using flahget. Cant remember what i had before though.

With cable internet service your service is a preprogrammed limit. The only way to exceed this limit is to contact the cable company and make friends with one of the operators and beg, plead, whore yourself into them changing the coding placed on the account. Or just pay for more bandwidth.

I did a bandwidth test before and after using Cablenut (obviously, I cleared the cache before running it again) and noticed an increase in download speed. On top of that I did some modifications on Firefox which made the browser also run faster (at least by perception).

thanks. -
I ran Tune XP, Cable Nut and I did the modifications to Firefox outlined on their website.
With running Cable Nut alone, using Comcast as my ISP, there was a 50% increase in download speeds. Obviously, I proceeded to install it on all of our home laptops after that.
I ran the bandwidth test on several websites: CNET and others, of which the names are escaping me for now. Do a Google search for modem/broadband test. -
can you clarify then if you are exceeding the bandwidth cap that is placed on you by your cable provider?
specifically,
1. what is your bandwidth cap?
2. what is your download speed w/software?
i'm capped at 4.5 by adelphia and that's exactly what i get from dslreports without any "optimization" software. -

Rarely have I seen someone get more bandwidth than what they were coded in thier account. I have seen people get less. They are the ones who may be benefitting from any type of optimization software to bring them upto thier quoted speed. Google speed test and run a few. Try a few different servers, near, far , different times of day. If your not getting near the speed your paying for, I would suggest a call to the cable co. Usually its a bad wiring issue either in your home or outside. A low signal or a bad or loose connection.
-
How do I tell the cap?
-
there should be an explanation of your service stating your bandwidth on your bill.
-
I will look into it. I just pay the monthly bill but I don't read it since the fee is the same.
