    Hi guys

I installed the XP SP3 update on my XP Home installation recently and now I get the login screen again, I never used to get that though...

I don't have a password and it's rather annoying having to select myelf as a user to get to the desktop!

Is there a way to bypass it so that the OS boots straight to the desktop without any input from me without using third party software such as TweakUI?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice. :)

Hmm...that's weird. Do you have any other User Accounts on your computer?

"Change the Way users log on or off" I think is the option you want to go to which is under Control Panel > User Accounts as aespinalc said

TweakUI isn't third party. It's a Microsoft powertoy. Installing it will not negatively affect you system in any way. Microsoft built it to only run when you open it, so it won't be an extra service running like other programs.

So I don't see why you would have any aversion to it. It's the first thing I install after a fresh install... Very powerful.

I know I didn't help answer your question, but what I say is true :). Give it a shot.

Under the Advanced controls for user accounts, there should be a tick box that, if set, requires users to login with name/password. If you uncheck the box, then you'll auto-login and boot will (once again) go straight to desktop (provided you don't have other real user accounts on the computer).

For a quick way to get right to the advanced controls for user accounts, see Method 1 on this webpage. This method is strictly within the functionality provided by the OS; the Method 2 on that webpage deals with TweakUI, but I believe you wanted to avoid that.
