I am using BitDefender Free Edition v10 - Build 247. This link gives features of the free edition.

It has good anti-virus detection & removal ability on doing a Full/User-defined scan. However, I am not sure if free edition offers 'always on' protection (similar to 'auto-protect' feature that Norton/McAfee & other AV products offer). If it does not, would like to change over to another AV product such as Norton Anti-virus or ESET NOD32.

Would appreciate any inputs on this, if you have used Bitdefender Free Edn.

    Thanks,

    No, it doesn't.

And I would suggest Nod32, Kaspersky 2nd, Bit Defender 3rd. Norton and Macafee are waaaaaaaay in the back behind all the things I've never tried.

Nod32 is very very fast, it hardly uses any resources. I wasn't all that impressed by Kaspersky in the past, but I wasn't let down either. I hear it's much better these days, so that bodes well. Bit Defender used to be my favorite, but over the last couple releases things have gotten downright slow and buggy (buggy especially on network shares), and there have been a frightening number of false positives.

You are positive of this? (no 'always on' protection in free version?)...there is the BitDefeneder icon sits in the SysTray.

From the page you linked to:

So, no, it doesn't include a real-time (always on) scanner. It's just an on-demand scanner to detect infections once they've occurred (recovery/forensics).

The only free, real-time antivirus scanners I know of are the free editions of Avast and AVG.

Avira also has real time protection through it's AntiVir Guard. As the manual states: "The Guard section of Avira AntiVir Personal Configuration is responsible for the configuration of the on-access scan." Considering that Avira Personal is free, it provides a wealth of features with a strong scanner.

Shouldn't this thread be moved?

Like it has been mentioned before, the free versions of AVG, Avast and Avira offer real-time protection.
Avira has the highest detection rate among those three.

If you are about to spend money on an AV product, I'd suggest to install trial versions of Avira/Eset/Kaspersky and test them individually before making a purchase.
In my signature you can find download links for free AV product versions.
Check the AV Comparatives website for test results regarding most major AV programs; link.
    Cheers.

NOD32 is by far the best AV out there right now.
