I have this "AVG POP3 Email Scanner" virus. Basically it pops up every once in a while stating that it's sending an email to a certain IP address. I know that it is hijacking the email scanner component of AVG to send its nefarious messages, so I'm thinking of switching.
Would you recommend Bit Defender (free) or AVG?

I have Bit Defender 10 (which is not free) and it a great anti-virus. Try different free anti-viruses (avast, avg, Bit Defender) to see if you can get rid of it, if not I'd would purchase one, like NOD32, Kaspersky, or Bit Defender.
Bit Defender protects me from almost all viruses because it has real-time protection. That's why its worth purchasing an anti-virus, because no free anti-virus comes with that feature. Bit-Defender was voted one of the best products of 2006, so you should considering buying it. -
What is probably happening is that you have a trojan (or another program) on your machine that is sending mail, and then AVG is intercepting it, scanning it, then sending it on. You need to scan your machine for trojans or spyware. There's nothing wrong with AVG. -
Whenever the pop-up appears, it uses AVG's email component. The process appears in the task manager. I don't know for sure whether it's a trojan or a virus, but I understand that they are the same thing.
