:( im soo lost rite now don't have a clue what's going on with my pc

    1) my accessories, quick launch icons, and systems folders are gone , disappeared

    2) any changes i make to my pc e.g. changing account picture, object dock settings doesn't save ..every time i restart my pc everything resets.

    3) my Norton security subscription is expired after 6 months when i bought it for 1 year. and everytime i try to renew it, it tells me that an error occurred during my subscription renewal and i will have to uninstall norton and reinstall it (when it came preinstalled).

I have used system restore and nothing works...system restore doesn't even work it tells me that system restore couldn't restore my settings and i will have to do it again. do it again and same thing.

Any body knows whats going i can really use the help

    Yes do a reformat.

I was wondering how come many people here do not like Norton?? I have been using it for several years already and I never had a virus attack of that magnitude.

Everyone who hates Norton, knows about it's evil side. Everybody who doesn't hate Norton, secretly hates it but chooses to ignore its evil side because they can't be bothered with buying NOD32.

Tell me the evil side?? I do not know.

If i is really evil I will just check out the AntiVirus Thread for a free antivirus program to replace norton.

Look here to see "the evils" of Norton. If you want good free protection, get Avira Antivir, if you want the best of the best, get NOD32. But you'll have to pay for it.

So it hogs resources too much.

Well will try Avira. But I would only do that when I uninstall Norton after I doing a reformat. Thanks for the info.

Remember to use the Norton Removal tool and if you run into problems, post it in the Security sub-forum.

If you have a vista install disk, you can do a Repair Install. This will renew the system files

If you dont then you most likely have to use the recovery disks.

Ive been using Norton since the XP days and even on Vista its been nothing but trouble. Its annoying, it hogs way too much resource and loads slow. Never again..

My friend, if you're going to buy anti-virus, get NOD32. It's the best of the best and i thoroughly recommend it to you, if you want a free anti-virus, look here. Also, as pixelot suggested, looking at my best free software for windows list would help too, and if you need guidance I'll help you.

I recommend you forget about the wasted $10 and just get one of those free antiviral utilities, or get NOD32 as i suggested. Norton isn't known for being a good anti-virus and you probably won't have to deal with any of your files being messed with anymore. I'm sure you'll notice a big speed improvement too.

    Q. Can you have more than one security software on your pc or will they conflict with each other?

don't try that, using 2 anti virus or 2 firewalls at the same time will cause you trouble....

It's generally not a good idea as they may conflict with each other as you said. There is usually a low chance of that but in your case, uninstall Norton and use the Norton removal tool after uninstall to get rid of anything left over before installing another AV. Also, do the same for your firewall, disable Windows firewall before using a better firewall such as Comodo Pro.
