I have a DVD that I want to backup, it is The Secret, you know, motivational kind of documentary.

What is the best program to allow me to convert this into an AVI with good quality (around 700 MB in size) without the need for expertise?

    Thanks

DVD Fab. If that's the only one you're going to back up then the free trial is just for you. FWIW if it's a normal sized (90 to 140 minutes) show, there isn't much you can do to make it look good at 700 MB (without a good deal of expertise...).

DVD Shrink 3.2 is the best i have tried. I use it to create a iso then use imgburn to put the iso on disk. It is very good for reducing file size also. dont no about outputing avi's.

Thanks! I'm using the Trial of DVDFab 8 Qt v8.1.6.1 and it did the job well where all other programs failed since the DVD was copy protected!

I wish I could buy it but it costs an arm and a leg!

More expensive than my Kaspersky Internet Security FFS

    I just use Handbrake.
Now i got most of my DVDs stored on my NAS drive in highly compressed x264 encoded video files.
Quality is nearly the same as the source.

But i dont know how well it would fare against advanced copy protected stuff.

Handbrake doesn't fare well against recent copyrights protection. That being said, i'd use DVDFab to get the raw video file and encode it in x264 using handbrake at a decent bitrate. Handbrake + 2600K = win for encoding videos.

Have you tried BadaBoom? It uses QuickSync and on my i7 2600 hits about 360 FPS (with about 20% CPU load) while handbrake loading it 100% gets less than 220 FPS.
