I know there is a thread for Windows, but that thread is dominated by XP software. Seeing as how Vista is realesed and will eventually have the primary market share, maybe we should start a list of Vista's best software.

    Yes/No?

Thanks for doing this, especially for maintaining it. It's nice to have the original thread up to date with all the links rather than going through page after page after page...

I think it should just be Software/Apps that were actually created with Vista in mind. Most programs listed in the free apps section are Compatible with Vista too, so it will sort of be a repeat. I'm more concerned with knowing apps that don't work with Vista or are made with Vista in mind at the moment.

Im sure most of them are compatible with Vista, but thats the key word, most. Id like to have a list that is a known good. And with the first posting a lot of the programs are spread out through all 25 pages.

Lets just start with the basics :

    a. Microsoft Office 2007 : expensive and made by Microsoft. But hey, they created with Vista in mind.
    b. Norton Internet Security 2007 : replace Defender and One Care with this. Surprisingly slim, does not hog resources and the Vista version is bugless (at least until now). You have to download the Vista version (50 MB) even though you bought the box.
    c. Fire Fox 2.0

Although I have both of those and agree that they are good programs, only "c" qualifies as "free software for VISTA" which is what the thread is titled.

    I'll chime in here -

I'm using AVG 7.5 ( Linky) as my virus scanner. It's free, and the latest version is fully compatible with vista.

It's decently lightweight (only a few running processes) - and for a free program, works splendidly.

That does look pretty cool, even though I don't like Yahoo! Messenger.

I agree with LiveFromNYC, we should not repeat the XP list. You can simply test the application by installing it and seeing if it works, let's not clutter this list...

Also, don't list Microsoft software as it was obviously created to be compatible with Vista.

I used to love Yahoo messenger. Now, the chat rooms are filled with autobots to the point that you can't even have a conversation anymore. I haven't really used a messenger in quite a while and yahoo's Voice capability sucks now. Do you know of any cool messengers created with Vista in mind?

I been chating on PalTalk for the longest now ...... Find the right rooms and it's a nice experience.

Yeah, this is the trend that the rest of the messengers should follow with Vista...

Now, on a completely different note, does anyone know any good video encoding software that's fast, reliable, and made with Vista in mind?

I dont want a cluttered list any more than the next guy so I will be making updates on it weekly (as long as posts are coming in). But we also have to remember that there are going to be people who dont know what XP is. Its going to happen, and im sure people will refer to where ever but at least having Vista in the title will help them with searches.
