I love movies, but I hate carrying them around with me everywhere. Does anyone know any good dvd ripping programs? If they are free that would be wonderful, but if not then no big deal. I want my whole collection on my laptop regardless if I have to pay or not.

To disable CSS protection, you can use AnyDVD from Slysoft. It's a popular choice. You just have it start at startup (or not), and when you insert the DVD, you can use any other program to copy it or whatever.

I really like CloneDVD for the copying part. It's made by Elby, but it's a European company, so here it's distributed also by Slysoft, online of course. Yes, it gives the shrinking option that everyone is so crazy about... But also, you can choose which chapters you want, or rip just the main movie without any extras. Or, you can deselect just those pesky FBI warning chapters and keep everything else. When you click on the chapter, you see what's there, so you know what you're selecting. You can also easily deselect extra languages and what not. When you're done making your selections, you can either burn the disk, save disk image, or just save the relevant files. Neato burrito! Did I mention it's really cute, too? :D

    For Movies:
    - Slysoft AnyDVD for decrypting DVDs in the background when any movie disc is inserted into the drive..
    - DVD Shrink 3.2 (or any other freeware) to rip and shrink it into a single layer disc.

    For Data:
    - CloneDVD is good
    - Nero 6 or 7 is good
    - CDRWIN is good

DVDFab Decrypter is free and works very well. Unlike DVD Shrink it is still being supported meaning they are still coming out with new versions. AnyDVD costs money.

DVDFab Decrypter is good as well, but AnyDVD just skips the whole step of decrypting by ripping a copy onto the harddrive.

So with AnyDVD automatically handling any encrypted DVD when inserted, you can go straight and shrink it with any freeware (DVD Shrink)... even if its now "up to date" (it being updated is not needed anymore).

Is that not what Fab does as well?

But does DVDfab shrink it for you?

I have DVDfab, but has it changed?

I always have AnyDVD running in the background to handle any and all DVD CSS and such without even knowing about it, and I can literally just drag and drop the unencrypted files onto the harddrive from the drive and wont get a problem.

You never have to startup and run AnyDVD, its always hidden in the background to decrypt and detect errors in DVDs.

So you can use a free DVD shrinking program right away, without having to decrypt it (which take about 15-20mins)

The problem is DVD Decrypter is not coming out with any new version since they were bought by Macrovision one of the copy protection companies. It won't work with some of the newer discs.

If you like to go the long way round, you can always visit www.doom9.net :p

    I personally do this:

Use Robot4Rip to rip it, And then use GordianKnot with DivX to convert to .avi

If it's a 2 hour movie and if you are doing a 3 pass (2 pass is sufficient most of the time) it takes ~7 hours. So just leave it overnight :p

Yea I have been running into that problem lately with some of my newer movies such as Live Free or Die Hard...

It sounds like RipIt4Me does not have that problem, I think I will give it a shot

EDIT: Wow, I just noticed that this almost a year old, I wonder why it was on the first page, that is where I found it, and it looks as if I am the only person to comment in a looong while. Well while we are on the topic is there any new good DVD copying programs out there, most of the ones in here seem to have been discontinued...

Please don't revive old threads Undacovabrotha10. If you wish, we can continue this in my best free software for windows thread as i have the perfect suggestion for you that gets the job done quickly and perfectly.

Even so, it'd be best to continue it in my software thread as the moderators should be closing this soon.

Perhaps he'd be better off starting a new thread about video ripping, rather than post in a thread that has hundreds of posts, covering all different software catagories, most of which were posted by you Calvin?

Eh, either way. I just see how mods are usually closing revived old threads and don't want a mod to close it in the middle of a good discussion. Either a new thread by him or my thread serves the purpose just fine.

DVD Fab HD Decrypter (free) with additional software such as DVD Shrink and Fix VTS (free), DVD Fab or AnyDVD (paid). At least that's what I'd suggest.

The link above does not work!!!

I have used DVDfabdecrypter to rip dvd and AVI.NET to convert it to AVI.

One problem I am still struggling is the file size.
