    I'd love to see a third party application that displays the volume and brightness, and looks good.

    What do you consider beautiful? I don't mind the Dell Quickset because it only shows up for a brief moment.

    I also recommend 3RVX, it's like Mac's volume. There is also more skins.

    I've gone ahead and installed 3RVX, and even with the default skin, it looks very elegant. Memory footprint could be improved on though to be honest (roughly 3MB RAM on W7Beta x64).

    Now we've got volume sorted, is there a similar application for Brightness? Maybe even a program that does both?

    They also say gingko biloba and blueberries help.

    The OSD volume runs very functional. Very responsive as well=exact opposite as to HP's :p
