My new samsung ativ book 7 has a feature called battery life extended to cap the battery to 80% when plugged in to extended the battery lifetime. I've read samsungs article about it and i understand how it works and all but i'm wondering if using it will be counter productive or not with my battery usage patterns.

I usually keep my notebook plugged in, but I tend to take it off the charger to use for 1-2 hours and discharge the battery by about 15-20% about twice a day. So is it better for prolonging the life of my battery to use BLE and discharge from 80-60 regularly or is it better to go from 100-80?

    Thanks

Doesn't matter. Theoretically 80% shouldn't put as much stress on the battery, but it's only a matter of a few % improvement. Might gain you an extra month of life out of the battery if you use it on battery frequently.

If you discharge 1-2 hours a day, you'll likely have to replace your battery after a year anyhow because the additive effect of discharging a battery will drop the max capacity of the battery with each full drain (and a full drain can be five times 20% drain and recharge, 10 times 10% drain and recharge, 1 time 100% drain, or 100 times 1% drain and recharge, regardless whether it started at 80% or 60% or 100%).

So does battery life extender (capping the max capacity to %80) actually extend the lifetime of your battery if you spend most of the time plugged in?

It can help, sure. Don't expect miracles. You're talking a few % at best. Battery capacity degrades over time whether used or not.
