can't watch youtube here. but at engadget, he gave an interview at the release date of win7. and he jokingly brought up the same selling phrases he used in that old advertising. it was awesome.

he's actually a cool guy in real life. i always thought he's very strange, but one can talk with him and have fun with him. i was very impressed by the engadget interview, changed my view i have about him massively.

I'm sure he's a pretty cool guy. He certainly gets a bad rap, as did Gates, just by being the public face of MSFT.

I might not be his target audience, but I would zap a few seconds in to that ad ;)

Well... that is, if I watched any commercial channels.

I think Ballmer is a clown, in both a good and a bad way. He has no problem with self-deprecation, which is a good trait to have, but I think his views on the computing industry as well as his competitors are warped, and ultimately, that's why I don't like him. I can't tell if he's being a provocative clown and real-life troll in saying some of the things he's said about open source and Linux, Apple's products, or Google, or if he's really that out of touch with reality.

I don't know if Gates is more mellow today than he was a decade ago because of his philanthropy and not having the stress of running Microsoft anymore, but he's not irritating to listen to, unlike Ballmer. I can't say if that was always the case, but Ballmer has taken attention hogging to a new level.

The problem with Ballmer is that he's not a very good manager. Microsoft has some really great engineers but they're mismanaged in a way that is almost criminal (Adobe's bad management and awful interface design should be considered as a crime against humanity... eurgh).
Why is the Zune HD's operating system separate from Windows Mobile? Why does the CE kernel suck so much? 'Pink'?
A lot of bad decisions have been made over the years over there. There has been no concrete vision for the whole of the company - just a ton of separate projects that are being run without consultation with other divisions. Maybe this is changing now. But the worst management decision will only rear its head soon - complete DRM lock-in on the Zune, X-Box, Windows and Windows Mobile platforms.

Gates had class, and still is a very smart man. Ballmer doesn't seem to 'get' the industry at all.
